Organized under the leadership of China’s Ministry of Education in collaboration with multiple government departments, the World Vocational College Skills Competition 2026 is a public-interest, international competition showcasing comprehensive vocational skills. The competition follows a three-tier format comprising preliminary rounds, semi-finals and finals. The finals consist of three stages: the medal competition, the ranking competition and the championship final. This year’s event features 43 competition tracks, attracting more than 9,300 teams and over 36,000 participants from 78 countries across five continents.
Under the guidance of faculty members from both Chongqing Polytechnic University of Engineering and Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology, four students from Tanzania presented a project titled Digital Diagnosis and Cloud-Based Maintenance of Arch Bridges Through Multi-Platform Collaborative Data Acquisition, based on real-world engineering applications.
Addressing challenges such as the structural complexity of arch bridges and the difficulty of accessing elevated sections for inspection, the team developed an integrated workflow covering three-dimensional inspection, intelligent damage assessment, standardized verification and cloud-based bridge monitoring. The approach enables bridge defects to be identified and assessed more effectively.
During the competition, team members worked collaboratively on visible-light and infrared inspections, ground-penetrating radar scanning and 3D point-cloud modeling. By integrating data from multiple sources with AI-assisted diagnostic technologies, the team improved the efficiency of defect identification and verification. The project offers a practical reference for the intelligent operation and maintenance of infrastructure developed under the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative in partnership with African countries.

In 2024, the Luban Workshop in Tanzania, established through cooperation between Chongqing Polytechnic University of Engineering, Tanzanian higher education institutions and Chinese-invested enterprises, was recognized as a nationally accredited Luban Workshop operation project.
Under the Luban Workshop partnership framework, the university established the China-Tanzania Institute of Engineering and Technology in Tanzania. Through a combination of domestic and overseas study, online and in-person instruction, and theoretical learning and practical training, the institute provides international students with education and professional technical training in fields including surveying, construction technology, quality inspection, software technology and mechanical engineering. These efforts have helped train a large number of locally based technical and vocational professionals for Tanzania.
Upholding the principle of aligning education with industrial development and integrating vocational training with industry needs, Chongqing Polytechnic University of Engineering has introduced an innovative phased training model for international students, combining professional instruction with hands-on practical education. Programs include a “1+2” model, with one year of study overseas followed by two years in China, and a “1+2+1” model, comprising one year overseas, two years in China and a final year overseas. These arrangements have improved the adaptability and relevance of international vocational education.
To date, the university has trained nearly 1,000 international students from countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative. Over the past three years, its international student teams have won four gold medals, five silver medals and two bronze medals at the World Vocational College Skills Competition.
The results underscore the university’s growing achievements in developing internationally oriented technical and vocational talent and its contribution to cultivating skilled local professionals in Belt and Road partner countries.
